the unbearable lightness of being

An image based on the Milan Kundera novel.

Its about a man who is torn between a carefree life of womanizing and lightness and his responsibility for the woman that he loves.

In the novel, Teresa, who is the main character's wife was described as a child taken by the river in a basket to his door to be cared for by him.

Infectious VOTE!

Hey all! Been a long while since I posted anything. So, I entered one of my latest illustrations into Infectious as a possible design for an iPhone skin. BUT, it won't be turned into an actual design unless you show me some love and VOTE for it!

You can do that here: http://www.infectious.com/voting/kiwifruitbird/buried/2967

And, you can even create and submit your own ideas! Go forth and vote!!

It's been about a year...

...Since I last posted anything here. Looking good people, it's nice to see this blog is still active and the talent is still fresh. I recently graduated the SVA MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program, so if any of you have questions, feel free to shoot me an email. (ray at jonesray dot com)

Here's the last few images from my thesis and personal work. These are all 50 x 39 in, ink on khadi watercolor paper (this paper is about the equivalent of canvas-- it's very heavy.)

"VS" Art Exhibit Tonight @ the Windup Space!

For those of you who are in the Baltimore area, come by tonight to check out "VS.", an art exhibit that features 14 local Baltimore video-game artists, comic artists, and illustrators, some of which may be familiar to everyone here (check out Jeremy Enecio's piece shown here).

Take a look at the list of artists below, and be sure to check out the blog which previews some of the pieces you will see at the show.

The Windup Space is on North Avenue near the corner of Charles St., across the street from the McDonalds in the Station North Arts District. There will be refreshments (Coke VS. Pepsi, Apples VS. Oranges, Dunkin Donuts VS. Krispy Kreme, etc.), and the Windup Space serves all kinds of adult beverages as well (it's a bar... there is also music after 9).
Hope to see you there!

Returner

Hi everyone I haven't posted on in here in like forever but I've decided to start again. So first the updates, I've moved out of the US and am currently residing in Brighton, England where I'm pursuing my masters in sequential design and illustration. Update number two: for anyone who remembers my work, I've moved away from collage, at least for the time being, and am focusing on figuring out this whole painting thing. Currently as part of my thesis I'm working on a graphic novel based around mixtapes, that's just a tease I'm not ready to post any of it right now. However here are some of my recent works and hopefully I'll be taking a more active part on here again.

Long time

Hey everyone, I havn't posted here in I don't know how long. I graduated from Ringling last year and am finding it harder to get feedback now. I'm doing a illo about the recent-ish hijacking by somalian pirates and am finding myself in need of some feedback. Here's the sketch (I've done a little more since the scan but not too much) Any feedback would help me a lot. Thanks

Colors

Boy, it's been awhile since I posted here.

Process work from a series I'm doing for Allan Comport's Illustrated Book class here at MICA. It's a weird retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. There's a couple places where a light's against another light or a dark against a dark that need to be addressed, but I'm really just trying to push some unexpected color relationships. There's some more process work from this on my blog as well.

I'll update as I reach final.

Richmond Magazine

an assignment done for Richmond Magazine.

A very interesting assignment, I had to illustrate two poems, one is about middle aged women feeling refreshed after a massage at a Korean spa. The other is about the love of a father for his son

sorry Sterling

AFI Film Festival

I was asked to create a lot of our promotional material for the AFI Dallas Film Festival, which starts today. The art direction was to make something that "makes the studio look awesome." This illustration is going in the program for the Festival to be seen by real cool people, so it made me real nervous.

I knew that my normal stuff doesn't really scream AWESOME FILM FESTIVAL, so I did a weird Shaun-Tan-esque robot with cowboy boots and cacti, since our studio is a bit of a crazy contraption.

In conjunction with the Festival, Reel FX also hosts the Tex Avery award, so I did another page for the program to advertise the event, and we decided to keep it in the same style as the robot ad.

And then, ALSO in conjunction with the festival is the Animation award, so I did the certificate that the winner will receive, along with whatever supersweet computer system.

Anyone else attending Concept Art's Reverie Workshop this weekend? Hope to see some of you there. Take care.

Comic

This is a comic I wrote and did all the art for as a sample. I tried to keep most of the writing to a minimum and focus on the art. I made this with the intention of pulling in freelance jobs at the NY Comic Con and for the most part it was a success. All the huge companies told me to get lost but a few small indie type publishers were interested and I'm currently working on sample pages for them.

As always, criticism is welcomed, and appreciated.

This is just the cover and 2 non- sequential pages from the inside. If your interested in reading the whole thing its on my blog.

Galeru's Graphisme dans la Rue

I got this off of www.graphiccompetitions.com, and www.lagaleru.org. Translated the title is "Graphics in the Street." This is an international poster competition held in a suburb of Paris. The theme is "the city." Entry fee is basically just the shipping price of your work as far as I can tell. There are "3 equal prizes : the winners will have their images edited
in silkscreen, format 120 cm x 160 cm and posted on billboards throughout the city of Fontenay-sous-Bois. Each winner will receive the sum of 1500 euros and 20 examples of their silkscreened image."

The deadline is March 15. I think i'll be entering. There are some other competitions going on right now, check out the website above to stay updated!

Some Thesis and Beyond

First post of 2009!! Well, I'm pretty sure I haven't posted any of this stuff here yet, and its been reworked here and there since when I first started these pieces anyway.

The first 3 were part of my thesis (well, the 3rd one was actually a freelance job, but "sshhh") and since thesis, I REALLY felt the need to go over that Jekyll and Hyde one. I also touched up the first 2 images, but the adjustements are minor. Edge control and saturation type stuff.

This one was another freelance assignment that I came back to about half a year later, and decided that I'd learned a lot since I first attempted it, so I wanted to re-work the thing. I'm pretty happy with how it finally turned out. For the most part.

And lastly this guy, this was something I started on at the Illustration Academy at Ringling this past summer, and wound up working on and off on it until very recently. So here it is!

Thanks for looking!

New Obama Drawing

Well, its been approximately 50 years since the last time I posted... jk, it has been a while though.

Anyway just wanted to share a drawing I did last night. Critiques are most welcome!

TITAN Illustration Contest

IT'S FREE TO REGISTER AND COMPETE and there is a CASH PRIZE (in euros)

from the website:
Every competition has its own particular characteristics, its own thematic orientation and, over time, develops its own tradition and reputation. TITAN in contrast is new, launched for the first time this year but with no lesser degree of ambition than to carve out its own particular identity.

The original impetus for the competition comes from the Superior School of Art and Design (ESAD) and the fact of being a design school has orientated the kind of search that the competition represents. At the core of the schools’ philosophy is a belief in design as a social tool, with all the cultural resonance that this implies. Moreover, we understand that in order to be an effective tool design must also be a process; of thinking, of collaborating and often of imagining, in short, a process that turns ideas into actions, concepts into reality. We strive to encourage a practice that is capable of generating a physical and visual world which expresses our society’s deepest needs and desires.

It is for these reasons that our attention is drawn to the ways in which the special skills of image making - drawing upon unique interpretation and vision - combine with other graphic and visual languages to create narratives and identities. Thus TITAN is concerned, not simply with illustration as a self contained practice but with the fusion of illustration and design.

We thought long and hard about the categories that would best encompass our objectives. Our belief in the promotion of a vibrant design culture, applied in social practice, led us to create categories which gravitate around notions of doing rather than a more conventional list of form-based areas. Needless to say, although forms of categorization may influence our perceptions - which is a good thing in itself - the search always returns to ideas expressed through the taking of form. Regardless of categories therefore, our most profound concern is to attract work of excellence that reflects the diverse and ever expanding domain of contemporary image making. That such excellence exists we have no doubt. Through TITAN we aim to celebrate it and its authors and most importantly, to take it to a larger public.

The Duck hunting images are for a short piece in virginia Living. The Top image is the feature and the bottom two were spots. Ink Blot Girls

I am taking a break from that giant fashion thing, and the Papa's Palace thingy today, and doing some INKBLOT GIRLzzz. they will actually be going in a kind of show thingy at a boutique in Baltimore, called London's Boutique.

I don't really know what the deal is... it's not an official show, but they'll be making an appearance at a party there. fun!

these are all pencil and ink, and scanned in for collaging.

and the double girl, i think i need to fix the one's arm... it's not quite long enough (forearm) the question is whether you all like the one where the arms are exposed more, or hidden under the dress. I like the one that's hidden more... but let me know.

The Official Guide to Papa's Palace

This is something my cousin John Gant is after me to do (he coordinates the rentals for the house).

It's a guide that he can send to renters and people unfamiliar with the house to help them understand where things are, how many people it sleeps, and things of that nature. I'm doing it in B+W/Grayscale to ease production (knowing my family, this will be printed off the computer everytime it needs to be sent, or, even worse, xeroxed UGHHH)

this is just the cover page, and one of the floor plans, a sample if you will, to show what i'm planning on doing. let me know what you guys think, pleeeez

For an article about some of the effects of the war.

This actually is my first job. Well first job that will actually be published. Its for realms of fantasy, and im not sure when the issue will come out or if its even available on shelves.

The story left me struggling to find something interesting to paint but I was pretty satisfied with this idea. The general gist of the story is that this group of people want to do something new, they find a map of that leads to a hidden/magical village and then they set off back packing to and try and find it. They end up finding the right spot on the map but they find no village.

Portrait of My Grandfather

Howdy y'all :)

My name is Bryce Homick, I'm a recent grad from MICA in illustration, with an unofficial concentration in Ceramics.  Currently I work at Firaxis Games doin 3D stuff and concept art.  I'm honored to be a part of the blog!

I stopped doing villain portraits for a second to paint my Grandfather, who passed away some time ago.  I ended up printing it out, framing it with driftwood and giving it to my Grandmother, who turned 90 this past weekend.

Admittedly the background is a little boring, and there are some parts that need help, but I was a little pressed for time, and the more important part was the face and likeness. I'm happy with the result.

Hi everyone. This is pretty much the first thing I've done this summer, just playing around and trying some things. I'm trying to find the right balance of cartooneyness for different things and I like how this turned out.
let me know what you think?

Hello All, Long Time no Post.

Hey everyone,

I haven't posted in ages, largely because of my computer crash a few months back put a definite halt to my digital work for a little while.

I'm working on getting back into it, heres a few things I've done recently.

Random find

http://www.ultimateirongiant.com/model/model.php

I was looking for hand reference for something i'm sculpting in zbrush.

I actually typed in Hogarth hands and for some reason this iron gaint website came up.

its got some of the original, or copies of the original designs and backgrounds. Thought someone on here might appreciate this.

Congratulations to the graduates of this year. I hope we keep seeing your success.

Coupla new things

Both from my "fashion class", this time taught by Frank Stockton.
More detailed explanations are on my blog, but basically the first one was for an assignment to illustrate "something worth shortening your life for", so I decided to do "Rocking too hard for the Man to handle." (I think that inking the lines by hand instead of computer probably would have made it better, though)

This other one was our second and last assignment from Frank. We were each given a fortune cookie and told to illustrate the fortune. Mine was "Smile to others, honesty and friendship bring you fortune." (the illustration is a bit of a stretch, but the two-headed man makes me smile.)

That's it for now!

I finally got around to joining this blog.. took me long enough. Just started experimenting with this technique. Any feedback is welcome.

Hullo

Hey everyone, I finally joined this blog, which is super exciting for me.
My name is Kate Haberer, I'm a junior at MICA (well, since the semester is almost over, I guess that means I'm almost a senior)

Heres a paper cut for you!

Its Thumbelina, and the first piece I did for my Junior "mini thesis" this semester.
Its a new medium for me, but I absolutely love it so expect a lot more.

Thesis Work

Finally, a spare minute to post thesis work!
So I based my thesis off of the Blues. I wrote a brief history of the music and selected what is, in my opinion, key events to telling the history. This was/is a really fun project. I believe that I chose wisely for my subject, which kept me from getting burnt out or bored with it. I saw a lot of people have the opposite effect with their work. I will continue to work on this after school and will hopefully be able to add another 15 spreads to the book. As of right now this is what I have hanging in the thesis show along with a handmade book, which I sold 9 of at the show and will continue to take orders. I make them as orders roll in. Hopefully I will get some photos on here of the book as well sometime soon.
The images are in order as they appear in the book. Essentially the art is supposed to be seen in book form with the text. I tried to make it so the images could stand alone yet when seen as a whole together in the book become even stronger. Underneath the images are the chapter headings that correspond to the image.

I am only posting a couple images here but the rest are on my blog: http://andrewrwright.blogspot.com
Pleas check out the whole and let me know what you think! Good or bad...

Bahamas, darling.

here is a floral lattice for a tropical dinner party in Nassau.

this one's for Kali

ok, so i said i would never post this, but i will anyway. it's two years old now, so no judging. And, kali, there deffinitely were ladies in couture on that famous airship, though maybe not Gaultier or Galliano. It was, after all, the maiden transatlantic voyage of the most luxurious way to travel in the future. AIRSHIP. Amazing (did you know you can still take a zeppelin cruise of the Rhine? I want to go.)

so here is "Love is in the Air."

pit of shaolin monks!

Well, because I was encouraged to post again by miss Laura Shema, here's another piece to add to my Duel to the Death series. I had a lot of fun with this one and I really think there's nothing cooler than Shaolin masters in Kung Fu movies so I had to include these guys and I hope I did them justice! Feel free to debate that issue with me.

Also, I revamped my blog into more of a portfolio site so if you feel like browsing, please check it out! thanks for looking.

New process, same old subject matter

Hey everybody. I kinda get tired of saying it, but the recent work on the site's been outstanding. Seriously.

Here's a couple new(ish) things. I'm trying out a few different ways of working, and these two, i think, are exemplars of that.

You all saw Kali's Macbeth poster that she did for Sam Weber's most recent assignment, yes? Well, here's the one that I did. Acrylic and colored pencil. I'm still really new to Acrylic, but I'm pretty pleased with this.

This second one was for Jose Villarrubia's Illustration Concepts class. The assignment was to use a mythological monster to express a contemporary societal issue. I did two, but the is the one that's completed to the level of quality I'm comfortable with. It's about the use of steroid (specifically the Human Growth Hormone) in professional sports. Not terribly complicated.

This was a black and white acrylic painting that I then applied some limited color to. It's a lot more realistic than my regular work because...well...every once in awhile I have to prove to myself that I can draw at least semi-realistically. I'm still trying to find a happy medium between the cartooning I love to do and my natural desire to render.

I've got a few things on my blog that I haven't posted yet, and I'll put the complement to that Minotaur piece on there in the next day or two, so if you're curious, hit up

Silly Animation...

Another sort of technical drill in CG. Crit welcome as always...

video

This is what it's like, right?

I don't post so often, but I figured you guys might get a kick out of these.  I recently did some illustration work for Ringling's Design Center, which handles all in house and local non-profit design projects all fancy style. They gave me the type for this one, and while (personally) I feel there's a bit more to being a freelance illustrator, it was still fun.

These illustrations are "maps" for different career paths, so kids or prospective students can kind of understand what a typical day might be like, if they don't understand the industry. I was asked to do four maps, with different careers, that looked like hand drawn maps you might draw to tell your grandma how to get to the grocery store or something.

this one is more the typical mappy type map, which was not as interesting, and I don't really know what train goes to the east village, sorry if my map leads you astray.
this was "digital film director" but I decided to let the designers handle the title, I blanked on a good solution. The desk of a film director looks suspiciously like an art student's....

Fun project, not often I'm told to draw more loosely. :)

Been Awhile...Go Figure...

...No pun intended.
Here are some drawings (in no particular order) from my figure drawing elective. I will miss this class...
These are all vine charcoal on Canson paper. George Pratt told me about the Canson paper. What a difference that stuff makes. It is soo smooth, which makes for easy lift out, and takes a pretty good beating.
Feedback is always encouraged!!

I really love this blog for many reasons. One is because of the diverse set of images that get posted. Although I have not been posting, I have been scoping this place out. It keeps me inspired and raises new ideas to address in my own work. I do apologize for not commenting as much as I want to or should be. I will be putting an end to that once I wrap up my thesis. Thanks guys and gals...and keep on cranking!!

EDIT-
Thanks Adam! I was not even thinking about how many images I was posting. There are many more of these on my blog if you care to look- http://andrewrwright.blogspot.com

Hercules V. Zombies

Hey everybody, heres a painting I finished a while ago for my thesis. Its Hercules as hes being surrounded by an enormous crowd of zombies. He doesn't really care though, because hes Hercules, and hes got the power of the Five Fingers of Olympus. That would be why his hand is on fire, if anyone is wondering. Also, the reason why theres zombies is those weird jellyfish looking things. Those are parasites that were dispersed in seed form by the cult of Hera through the meat at Titan Burger. Its a long story, Hercules worked as their mascot, and when all hell broke loose he was one of the few people not turned into a zombie. Why? Because hes a vegetarian of course. Anyway, the rest of the story he's trying to set things right by working his way through the cult members, who take the form of the beasts in the 12 labors of hercules. It's been a really fun project, and I'm doing two more paintings before the end of the semester. More on those soon.

I used some friends as reference for some of the zombies. Can you name them all? Hint: Theres 5 MICA senior illustration majors.

Oh! Also I have a blog set up at feastofbees.blogspot.com. I've got a bunch more work up on there and update it much more often. Check it out!

Updates!

Hey guys, some new stuff for y'all!
I updated ciesemier.com with a bunch of new things, and also prodded my blog into being, kalidraws.blogspot.com
I thought I'd share my most recent completed assignment for Sam Weber, who has been teaching in our Fashion Illustration class. (Basically, Sam's assignments have nothing to do with fashion, but I'm alright with that)
He asked us to come up with a poster illustration for any Shakespeare play, and I ended up doing Macbeth. I also tried out graphite instead of pen. I like the textures on Macbeth's face and hands, but I'm not sure about the rest. (I also had some horrible text drawn in at the bottom too, but I took that out...)
Let me know what you think.

Hi. I'm new to this group. Here are some new things I've done. More at my website nataliejeanne.com.
Don't have as much work since graduation as I'd like to, but no one ever told me what would be in store for me after graduation, and how that would impact my art productivity.

Big Huge Games - Art Open House

As a fellow Illustration grad (MICA '95) I've enjoyed following all the impressive work that's been shared on the site. Adam was kind enough to send me an invite (thanks Adam!) and I wanted to follow up from Neal's post below with pics of the Open House invite which include driving directions to Big Huge...

I hope to return from time to time and share concept art and other imagery from Big Huge. Currently we have six Illustration grads in our art department, five from MICA and one from Syracuse. Here's a teaser image from our as-yet-unannounced RPG (being led on the design side by Ken Rolston, of Oblivion fame) from Syracuse Illustration grad and BHG Lead Concept Artist, Sean Andrew Murray...

Lots more work from our past Big Huge titles can be found in this conceptart.org thread...

Hope to see you at the Open House!

Here's a bunch of stuff

Man, I have been neglecting blogs all over the place. I am sorry for that. Here is some stuff I've been doing lately.

These first three were a series I did for my Fashion class. It's not fashion related, get off my case. This was Sam Weber's first assignment for us, which was to basically do three pieces with a working hierarchy (Jack, Queen, King, style). Mine are about the colonization of the American midwest when it was full of giants. These were all done in Acrylic and colored pencil and are about eleven inches high by whatever inches wide. I still need to do some color correction on the bottom two, but I wanted to post them. Maybe they'll get posted later when they're all fixed.

There's this site called Project Rooftop (projectrooftop.com) that has contests to redesign Superheroes and they have prizes and such. They're doing an Ironman competition now, or rather, they had an Ironman competition which ends tomorrow. I decided to spend time I ought to be spending on school work trying to win some comics and shit. Here he is, in his photoshop majesty.

I wrote some notes in the email I sent to PR, so I think I'll post those and save some breath.

Hey, guys! This is my first attempt at a redesign for PR, but I am a student of Daniel Krall and he challenged me to superheroic fisticuffs. A couple of quick notes on what I'm calling the Model L Mark I Golden God Variant of Stark's classic suit:

With the advent of advanced cameras and HUDs, the suit has advanced far past the need for any physical eyeholes, yet the semblance of a face remains to add some level of humanity to the suit. The shoulder plates have been streamlined to connect into a neck-guard, preventing projectile injury to the most vulnerable part of our hero. The whole suit, actually, was streamlined for flight more than anything else. Any extraneous elements have been scoured off in an effort to minimize breakage during combat or crashes. The multiple repulsors on the suit serve dual purposes: first, they enhance aerial maneuverability to the point where the suit can generate a sort of anti-gravity field. This, in turn, prevents damage to Stark's surroundings, as he's not just firing hyper-focused beams of energy everywhere. Additionally, the repulsors can be individually activated or deactivated, allowing the airborne Start to rocket in near perpendicular directions while maintaining forward acceleration. The second purpose is as a defense against larger enemies (read: Hulk). I originally designed a variant of the Hulkbuster armor, but decided to scrap it and add some elements of that suit to the Golden God. The repulsors on the arms prevent Stark from being easily lifted and thus easily tossed by Hulk or other bulky adversaries.

I will seriously try and comment more in the future. I am very sorry.
This is a drawing based on the sketches I posted a day or two ago, it's about 38x 13 -

sketches for new painting

Hey, I'm new.. ish. Thanks for inviting me Adam! I'm a mica alum from painting, and have been really impressed with the postings on here, so glad to be a part of it. I'm posting sketches of what my next painting will be, I can't decide if I want her masked or not, because with out the mask it gives off an alabaster, static feeling, but my gut tells me the mask. Oh, to explain the last one, that will be the top of her hair, i plan to make it miles high and as ornate as possible. Let me know what you think!

Good sculpture book.

So I'm working on a maquette next for my thesis. And reading carefully through one of Smellybug's tutorials on conceptart.org i found a book name that he posted. I checked it out and its really sweet. It even works as an anatomy book. The sculptor in the book builds up a figure sculpture from armature, to the skeleton, to the muscles, and then puts skin on. It's a really great resource for both figure sculpture and drawing as it illustrates all the good stuff about anatomy. The book is called Modeling the Figure in Clay.

Growing Up

Another illustration for my book.

Cowboy Monster Hunter

Hey everybody, my name is Zachariah Bauer, I've been a member of the School of Ill blog for quite some time now, and been looking at it for a bit longer, but for some reason I've never posted anything. Well that ends today! We had spring break this past week at MICA and instead of going home, I decided to do work. So heres a bit of what i did this past week.

Oh, and some other info if anyone is wondering, I'm a Senior at MICA. This comic is literally the first comic I've ever done, and I'm really jazzed about it. My sequential teacher actually wants me to pitch it to some european publishers and make it into a full comic. Which would be sweet, if i had the time currently. Anyway, most of what I've been focusing on is character design and development. I'll be posting more work from my thesis soon. More on that later. But if anyone at MICA is curious, the second senior illustration show is going up this week on the third floor of the brown center.

thanks,
Zachariah Bauer

Richard Solomon’s Office Destroyed in NYC Crane Collapse

On Saturday, the 15th, a crane collapsed in Midtown Manhattan and crushed a four-storey townhouse, with additional damage to five other buildings, and four deaths.

The building that the crane demolished contained the offices of Art On A Grand Scale and the Artists Representative Richard Solomon. The staff members of these offices were unharmed, but the collection of famed illustrations it housed within are gone. Updates are being posted to Richard Solomon's blog, reporting on the loss of the building, the loss of the history within, and the memories it held.

My sympathies and well-wishes go out to everyone who has been affected by the tragedy.

Buy things from me.

Go to my website www.gantart.com and click the word "shop" or go straight to this link: GP Shop.

I have now put posters, note cards (great for thank yous and hellos) and a lot of new art. You can buy framed archival prints, for a really good price at just uner $40 dollars and the quality and colors are good. I'm also selling unframed posters, mugs, baby onesies, dog tshirts, and a lot of other stuff.

What do you think of that?

Also, check out using cafepress for selling your own stuff. Not to advertise it or anything, but it is fun to set up shop, and people look at it and think "oh they're interested in doing things with their artwork."

it's a good thing to do for yourself.
